Jerome L. Taylor was born and raised in Richmond, VA and in 2008 became a transplant of the Hampton Roads region. At the age of seven he became a member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond where he remained an active member throughout high school. During that time, he began cultivating his desire to positively impact the lives of at-risk youth and their families, eventually returning and becoming a Program Leader after attending several colleges including Hampton University and Virginia Commonwealth University. From there, he became an Intensive In-Home Counselor where he was an integral member of a program devoted to behavior modifications, anger management and the development of problem solving, social and coping skills. Jerome’s work ethic and heart-filled passion to aid all those he encounters propelled him into leadership roles within several licensed mental health agencies where he held positions as a: Team Lead, Supervisor, Regional Program Manager and Regional Program Coordinator. While in these positions he expanded agencies into the Hampton Roads area achieving much success through quality service with a lead by example mentality. Jerome’s experience, aptitude, and demeanor have made him a successful attribute to all services and agencies with which he has been involved. His empathy, rapport with youth and desire to ensure the success of all children and their families, regardless of their circumstances, has impacted the lives of many and he continues to be instrumental in their lives and an important factor in their continuing growth. As President and acting Executive Director, Jerome is always researching and planning for the next move towards success for all impacted through services; looking to provide the highest quality of service and create partnerships that will allow for endless resources for every child and family of Urban Learning and Leadership Center Family Services.

Richard Coleman taught 2nd grade for 2½ years before serving for 14 years at An Achievable Dream Academy, a K-12 inner city school in Newport News, Virginia serving approximately 1200 students. He served as Assistant Principal, Principal and retired as Executive Director in 2010. During his tenure there, Richard had the opportunity to implement S.A.M.E. which was instrumental in generating significant academic results by narrowing the achievement gap to within 3 percentage points. The social and moral components of S.A.M.E. were instrumental in Achievable Dream providing sound social skills for every student and resulting in significant reductions in office referrals while maintaining the highest attendance rating within the school district. Mr. Coleman comes to education with an extremely varied background. A native of New York City, he served in the Air Force for 4 years and is a Vietnam veteran, he served for 6 years as a New York State Narcotics Correction Officer in Staten Island, New York and in 1991, accepted early retirement from IBM (International Business Machines) where he served as an Account Manager for 15 years. Richard introduced the Family Services division to ULLC Inc. after realizing that S.A.M.E has a place in the home as much as in the school. As CFO Richard manages all business affairs of ULLC Inc. and ULLC Family Services.

John W. Hodge has served as a reading teacher, English teacher, AVID teacher, Assistant Principal and Associate Director of AVID Center Eastern Division. He served as Director of An Achievable Dream Academy, an inner city school where many of the interventions used by The Urban Learning and Leadership Center were piloted. An Achievable Dream Academy is a high performing, high poverty school that has received numerous national awards. Today, he shares his wealth of knowledge as President of ULLC™. Prior to starting his career in education, Dr. Hodge distinguished himself in the service of our country with the 7th Infantry Division of the United States Army. He is known as a master teacher and staff developer. His career has been defined by helping students and teachers overcome obstacles and achieve goals. Dr. Hodge has served as a motivational speaker across the United States and has been a guest lecturer at Christopher Newport University, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University and George Washington University. Dr. Hodge recently earned his doctoral degree from Virginia Tech. His presentations often serve as “the spark” for many schools in their quest to meet state and federal accreditation standards. He is also a frequent speaker for elementary, middle and high school student assemblies. John W. Hodge is an expert in helping schools plan for continuous improvement. In addition to being ULLC’s chief inspirational “motivator”, Dr. Hodge is frequently entrenched with the leadership team within each S.A.M.E site, developing curriculum and putting the core elements in place that drive academic success.

Harvey Perkins has spent 32 years in public education as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent for instruction. He has led school-based and district wide reform in both suburban and urban school districts. For over 15 years he has taught educational administration courses at The George Washington University, specializing in the areas of curriculum development and leadership training. Dr. Perkins has been consulting and training in the area of school improvement both in the state of Virginia and nationally for 20 years. He is a certified curriculum auditor through Phi Delta Kappa’s Curriculum Audit Center, a certified trainer in the Southern Region Education Board’s (SREB) Leadership Initiative modules on “Creating a High Performance Learning Culture” and “Using Data to Lead Change”, and a certified assessor and mentor/coach trainer by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in its “Developing the 21st Century Principal” program. His primary focus for training centers on increasing the capacity of school leaders to build distributed leadership networks in their buildings and in their districts to increase student achievement in the era of high stakes testing and No Child Left Behind. As Chief Executive Officer of ULLC, Harvey now manages and oversees all elements of S.A.M.E implementation in school districts around the country, including onsite teacher and leadership team training, resource development, success metrics and tools, contract negotiations and operation support for ULLC’s team of trainers.
